Welcome to Preston County

The intent of the blog is for us to help each other out. For example if you are teaching a unit in Reading and find something really good to go with it you could share with the rest in your grade level. On the reverse of that if you are having trouble with a unit or are in need of ideas you can express those thoughts and maybe a colleaque could give some suggestions.

I have listed everything by grade level for grade K-5 and then for middle school I listed it by subjects.

What you need to do first is find the grade level you want to post in ....it might be easier to find the list on the right of the page.....click on it and then you will be able to make a comment in that grade level.

We can also add other topics for the good of the order for all grade levels.

  4. As a member of the first grade team for the TLI Next Generation Standards training from Preston County, I was supposed to report daily my thoughts and experiences of each day. As it turned out, my days never ended before 11:30 p.m.(as we had assignments and lots of materials we chose to read in order to get the most from our training.) Also, dreamland was elusive as my mind kept busy with NxGen. Then it was up at five to get to the Waterfront in time to get a parking space I could find later that evening when my mind had been reduced to mush. That said as an explanation for our missing reports....it was an incredible traning.
I might not have decribed the training as such early on in the week. My experience was a journey. By Wednesday, things began to come together and our endless creative/artistic reponses did not seem such a waste of time after all. In fact, I am anxious to have my first graders organize our "art cart" and use it to create reponses as evidence of their learning.
By week's end, paradigms had been shifted, pedagogy challenged, new straetgies embraced, and some old ideas validated. Now to retun to the county and share with others our week's journey in 3 hours...
Some "big ideas" I hope we can effectively share are...
."deep not wide" Nx Gen standards
. permission granted to innovate (and fail)
. classroom atmosphere has a huge impact on children's
    disposition for learning
. we've got to "move it, move it" (really)

I would repectlfully request a month extension of the summer to read a number of professional books about which I am quite excited and to study the appendices of the NxGen standards document. I'm less excited about the appendices, but they are very imformative and are like scripture, your get something new each time you re-read. Disclamer: The appendices offer nothing of eternal worth. Just a way to better educate our students.

Wish you could have been there!
